Weldon Student Nomination - (All Students)
Of the many scholarships and awards given each year to South Pasadena High School seniors, perhaps the most meaningful and prestigious are the Weldon Fairplay Awards. With the criteria of scholarship, integrity, responsibility, good sportsmanship, and being fair to all people, it is no wonder that it is so highly regarded.

A committee of students and teachers will select three senior girls and three senior boys to receive this recognition, but each SPHS student has an opportunity to nominate one senior boy and one senior girl for the committee to consider. If you feel you do not know any seniors well enough to know who embodies these attributes, you do not need to nominate anyone. If you only know of a senior boy, or only a senior girl, who qualifies, you may choose to only vote for one.

(Please note that these are nominations, not votes, so no matter if a student receive one or forty nominations, their name is added to list to the committee.)

School Start Time Survey - (All Students)

SPHS starts its school day at 8AM, but throughout the state and country, there has been a shift in certain high schools to later start times. There is even a current California State Senate bill proposal of an 8:30AM or later start time mandated in all public schools. Administration has been working with a group of students to explore possible options of later school start times. The goal of this survey is to get input from SPHS students about the possibility of moving the school start time from 8:00 to later, to determine any positive or negative implications.

PRO:
  • More sleep has been medically proven to have health benefits for students.
  • Studies show that later start times have benefits in GPA, attendance, tardiness, and discipline when schools begins at 8:30AM or later.
  • Biologically, later school start times would cater to teenage sleep cycles and brains that function better at later times.
  • There would likely decrease traffic because of the staggered start times with our neighbor school, Holy Family, that currently starts at the same time as we start.
CON:
  • Student athletes may have to miss more of 5th/6th period to travel to games, practices will be pushed back and go later into the evening.
  • Parents may be inconvenienced due to the staggered start times between the middle school, high school, and elementary schools. Parents who drop students off and head directly to work may also be inconvenienced.
  • The delayed start times may be an excuse for students to simply stay up later instead of using that extra time to get more sleep, thereby negating the intent of moving start times later.
  • After school tutoring and other services (like musical lessons, doctor’s appointments, etc.) will be impacted and forced to move later in the day.
